Another Indigenous Success for Skill Hire

The Hon Bill Marmion, the Minister for Housing and Works, today presented Aboriginal apprentice, Dean Wynne, with his trade certificate following his successful painting and decorating apprenticeship with Skill Hire. Mr Wynne joins the list of over 400 Aboriginal apprentices to have completed their trade certificate with Skill Hire, one of Western Australia’s most successful group training companies.

Skill Hire’s Executive, Indigenous Strategy, Anthony Galante said, “We are really proud of Dean’s achievement. He is has done a great job and is a role model to other Aboriginal apprentices within our company and more broadly in the construction industry. We know that Dean will follow his father’s footsteps as a successful painter.”

Mr Wynne’s apprenticeship was a partnership between the Satterley Property Group, the Department of Housing through its Urban Renewal Project at Phoenix Rise and the Department of Treasury and Finance’s Industry Training Unit.

Housing Minister Bill Marmion said a number of Indigenous people had been employed to work on the Phoenix Rise Hamilton Hill Project as part of the Department of Housing’s commitment to providing employment and education opportunities for Indigenous people.

“The Department strives to generate and integrate Indigenous employment and training initiatives as part of its business operations and we have made this conditional in a number of new projects,” Mr Marmion said.
Skill Hire Managing Director, Tony Fitzpatrick confirmed the company’s commitment to Indigenous employment stating, “It is a significant achievement for Dean to achieve his trade qualification. Skill Hire has recently signed the Australian Employment Covenant and we will be looking to increase the levels of Indigenous apprentices in our company as part of this commitment. It is clear that we can achieve great outcomes for Indigenous people through partnerships such as this one at Phoenix Rise.”

Satterley’s Darren Walsh added, “We are proud of our efforts to deliver a quality Urban Renewal Project that has also achieved significant social outcomes demonstrated through Dean’s apprenticeship. We are looking forward to seeing Dean’s brother, Marcel, qualify in the near future.”
