The success of the Skill Hire Aboriginal School Based Traineeship continued with Derek Rivers completing his Certificate II in Automotive. Derek, from Halls Creek, has been attending North Albany Senior High School for the last three years and has achieved his pre-apprenticeship qualification setting himself up for an apprenticeship as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic.
Derek commenced his traineeship and employment with Skill Hire Albany in April 2010. Skill Hire managed his work placement at Albany Toyota and De Jong Automotive where he worked one day a week to complete the on the job competencies of his traineeship while continuing his school studies during the other days.
Derek’s success is as a result of the partnership between the North Albany Senior High School, the Clontarf Football Academy, the Albany Residential College with funding support from the Department of Training and Workforce Development.
Skill Hire CEO, Steve Edgar said, “It is pleasing to see Derek complete his traineeship with the support of Skill Hire, NASHS, Clontarf and the Albany Residential College. This is not the end of the road from our perspective as Derek has moved to Broome to be closer with family in Halls Creek, so we will continue to work with Derek and the Clontarf Football Academy to find an apprenticeship placement for him.“
Derek said, “I am thankful for the support and encouragement that I have received from my host employers and Skill Hire. This sets me up really well to become a qualified heavy diesel mechanic and then go on to train other Indigenous kids in the automotive industry. ”
