Young bricklayer wins rising star award

At just 23-years-old, Ardross bricklayer Kyle Goff has had a busy time building his own business – and now he’s won a major building industry award.

Kyle won the 2010 Ric New “Rising Star” Award at this year’s Master Builders Awards after being nominated by Skill Hire, who trained him as an apprentice.

The award is named after the founder of Midland Brick and is awarded to a high achiever up to 25 years of age who has demonstrated outstanding potential, work ethic and commitment to the building and construction industry in Western Australia.

Skill Hire Manager Bob Hodnett said Kyle was a terrific young man who was passionate about his trade.

“He started his apprenticeship with us in late 2004 and quickly developed into an outstanding apprentice,” he said.

“He went on to win the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Award in 2007, capping that off with the World Skills Bricklaying Gold Medal in Sydney that year.

“Now he’s running his own business, working in both the housing and commercial sectors, and is passing on his skills to two apprentices of his own, including one from Skill Hire,” Bob said

For Kyle, who said he was “pretty much a surprised” to win the award, there is still plenty more to do. He aims to become a builder and intends to enrol to do a Diploma in Building and Construction next year.

A current Skill Hire apprentice, Clinton Prosser, won the Department of Treasury and Finance award for the Most Outstanding First Year Apprentice and the Skill Hire First Year apprentice Award.
